PROFILE

Mr. Tekameren I Jamir

I am Tekameren I Jamir, Co-Founder and Outreach Coordinator of a Bird Conservation Project under Azim Premji University, Bangalore, I work to advance community-driven conservation, ecological education, and sustainable environmental practices across the State. My work is grounded in a deep commitment to safeguarding Nagaland’s diverse ecosystems, while strengthening the relationship between people and the natural landscapes that sustain us. I worked as a Research Associate for Azim Premji Foundation to study the effects of different landuse system in bird diversity in different parts of Nagaland.

Over the years, I have collaborated with local communities, governmental agencies, academic partners, and civil-society groups to design and implement projects addressing forest protection, waste management, biodiversity monitoring, and environmental awareness. My role often involves planning field outreach, delivering training sessions, coordinating volunteers, and building long-term partnerships for conservation action.

One of my key areas of engagement is biodiversity documentation and citizen-science initiatives. I have been part of organising, leading, and supporting statewide bird-monitoring efforts, including chairing the launch of major events such as the Tokhü Emong Bird Count. Through these initiatives, I strive to empower citizens, students, youth groups, and nature-enthusiasts to contribute meaningfully to wildlife conservation by learning to observe, document, and protect the species that share our landscapes.

As part of Eco Warriors Nagaland’s conservation outreach, I have also facilitated awareness programmes on mitigating human–wildlife conflict, especially in regions vulnerable to interactions between local

communities and wildlife. These programmes aim to equip villagers with practical knowledge, foster coexistence, and strengthen community stewardship over forests, wildlife corridors, and shared natural resources.

In addition to my work with Eco Warriors Nagaland, I have represented the Naga Biodiversity Collective in assessing and inspecting the progress of the Royal Enfield land-restoration initiative at Old Jalukie, undertaken under the Green Hub programme. This involvement provided valuable insights into habitat restoration methods, community-oriented ecological rehabilitation, and the broader landscape-level approaches required to restore degraded forest spaces. Being part of this evaluation strengthened my dedication toward promoting restoration-based conservation and collaborative environmental governance in Nagaland.

My broader vision is to build a stronger bridge between scientific ecological knowledge and indigenous traditional wisdom — two pillars that must work together to ensure long-term sustainability in our region. I believe that conservation becomes truly effective only when local communities are informed, involved, and empowered as equal stakeholders in shaping the future of their environment.

Through my work, I remain committed to a future where the people of Nagaland live in harmony with nature; where forests and wildlife are protected not just by policies, but by collective understanding and community pride. My goal is to help foster a generation of environmentally conscious citizens and to contribute, in every possible way, to the protection of our natural heritage for generations to come.
